Our Mission

Community Healing Initiatives, Inc. (CommHeal) is a 501(c3) compliant non-profit organization based in Prince George's County, Maryland.

We are birthed out of the work and engagement with the community in and around Capitol Heights. Our goal is to empower neighbors through green initiatives, promoting mental and physical health vital to both young and old.

Our Roots

Founding members Elaine Williams and Jean Johnson, both contributors to the Town of Capitol Heights government, met local grower Kush el-Amin in late 2020. Realizing the need to improve community health could be addressed through green initiatives, a pact was made.

2020

The founding members meet and identify the need for sustainable, health-focused community interventions.

2021

Engaged the Town government to build a 72'x32' high tunnel on Bayou Ave and Capitol Heights Boulevard for community gardening and education.

Present

Hosting gardening classes, fellowship events, and operating two additional gardens in Capitol Heights and Greenbelt, MD.

Current Initiatives

Expanding our impact through education, agriculture, and support.

Urban Agriculture

We facilitate educational programs that build valuable skill sets in agriculture, agroforestry, and composting.

Youth & Seniors

We actively engage youth and seniors in our gardening classes. Our network supports individuals dealing with challenging circumstances, promoting intergenerational healing.

2025 Grants

CommHeal is a recipient of grant funding for the county-wide Anti-Violence Initiative and the state's Social Determinants of Health studies in Prince George's County.
